Vijaya Dashami, an autumn festival, is not being celebrated grandly in the Kutupalong Hindu refugee camp in Ukhiya upazila. Hindu refugees are more concerned about the puja celebrations this year than other years. A visit to the Kutupalong Hindu refugee camp on Saturday revealed that there was no festive mood among the refugees in the Hindu camps who had fled the persecution by the Myanmar army. Refugees from 112 families in the Kutupalong Hindu camp have expressed concern over the puja celebrations. The Hindu refugees said that for the last two years, they had taken refuge in Bangladesh and celebrated the puja with joy in collaboration with the Bangladesh government. But this year, the day of Durga Puja (Vijaya Dashami) is approaching, but they are worried about whether the puja will be celebrated in such a big way. The Hindu refugees also said that like the last two years, they want to celebrate Durga Puja with the festival this year as well.
Members of the Armed Police Battalion are making every effort to ensure the safety of the Hindu refugee camps, APBN members said. They said the APBN was keeping a close watch on the Hindu refugee camps to prevent any untoward incidents. The Hindu Rohingyas sheltered in Bangladesh after fleeing from Myanmar were celebrating Durgotsab with various arrangements. They took refuge in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, to escape persecution and killings by the Myanmar military after August 25, 2017. About 500 Hindu Rohingyas from 112 families have their shelter camp on the site of the government forest department at Kutupalang in Ward 9 of Rajapalang Union in Ukhiya . Visiting the Kutupalong Hindu refugee camp, Hindu refugee children are also seen celebrating their big religious festival Durga Puja Vijaya Dashami and sharing their joy in a big way.
On August 15, 2017, Hindu refugees took refuge in the Kutupalong refugee camp in Bangladesh after fleeing persecution by the Myanmar army. Since then, the government of Bangladesh and various local and foreign NGOs have been providing their services. Since taking shelter, all religious festivals including Durga Puja have been celebrated with joy.
Ukhiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nizam Uddin Ahmed said clothes had been distributed to everyone in the Kutupalong Hindu refugee camp. The government has instructed to distribute clothes worth Rs 4 lakh and to perform puja on condition in Corona situation. He further said that all kinds of cooperation will be provided for the observance of religious festivals and the festival will have to be observed in accordance with the conditions in Corona.
