Border Trade between Teknaf and Maungdaw is postponed without notice. there is no traffic between Bangladesh and Myanmar from Teknaf land port Since August 24. 13 cargo trawlers along with 44 staff of Rohingya community from Myanmar are trapped in Teknaf land port. However, the Teknaf-Akyab border trade continues in a short range.
Authorities of Maungdaw Township are not allowing the traders to bring goods to Teknaf port As well as the import-export transportation is closed.Though some goods were being imported from akyab (seetway).The condition of export-oriented business is more noxious.
It is learnt that collection of revenue has been collapsed sharply due to unilateral shut down of transactions by the Maungdaw authority.Teknaf land port Authority could not achieve their revenue target for unexpected situation in the month of september 2017.Earlier, it was easy to acheive revenue collection of NBR target even several crore surplus but in the month of september They could not find any headway.
It is known that the Business point of Bangladesh-Myanmar is known and operated as “Teknaf-Maungdaw border trade”.it was inaugurated from maungdaw and teknaf simultaneously on 5th September 1995.Border business has been playing a significant role to boost relation, economic prosperity as well as creating job opportunities in both countries. Myanmar government has discontinued the business without information or embargo since cleansing operation started in Rakhaine state.As a result User of the land port, importer-exporter, C&F agent and hundreds of labours have been hurt financially as well as government is deprived from expected revenue.
On 12th September afternoon it was seen that there is no work to do.Some goods and Timber came from outside maungdaw.No deadlock in the outskirt of the port.There was no noise of the workers.The condition of import-export and revenue collection dropped suddenly.
According to custom’s source, before influx about TK100 crore worth of Goods were being transported between two countries every month.on the contrary, in the month of september Tk.28 crore 47 lacs 22 thousands 662 worth of product were imported through 141 bill of entry.tax collection was Tk.5 crore 67 lac 161 only.Tk 6 crore 82 lacs was the target from National Board of Revenue.Attainment was Tk.1 crore 14 lac 99 thousands 839 less than desired target.
The export trade image is more deleterious. Earlier, several types of Bangladeshi products were exported in Maungdaw Township from Teknaf land port. Previous record was approximately one crore taka per month against about 100 bill of entry.But now only Tk.37 lac 91 thousands 893 worth Bangladeshi product has been exported through 16 bills of entry.
In the Month of Eid ul adha, Income in the cattle sector was better.There were a lot of livestock came from Myanmar. There are two cattle corridor between Bangladesh and Myanmar.Tk.42 lac 1 thousand and 200 earned from 9,942 cattle through Shahporirdhip corridor.
General Manager of Teknaf land port said,Some goods are coming from Akyab.No shipment arrived here from Maungdaw since 24th august.We have no information when it will start again.further more,immigration wing of Teknaf land port is closed since october 2016.We have informed higher authority regarding 13trawller and 44 staff.We are optimistic,maungdaw-teknaf border trade will start very soon.
